Uzès, France

30.08.13

We drove through Avignon, a place we have visited in the past.  It still looks sturdy with its fortified walls surrounding the centre, and the "Pont d'Avignon" is still standing, missing a few arches, and attracting a throng of tourists.

We considered stopping in St-Remy, a town between Aix and Avignon.  Friends of ours stayed there last year and just loved it.  Unfortunately, we were running out of time, so on we went.

As we drove on, it became more and more exciting to see names of towns that we knew.  These are our stompin' grounds!  This is where we first fell in love with France, a fascination that has brought us back time and time again.

We stayed at un "hôtel particulier", Le Provençale, in Uzès.  Very chic and very comfortable.  Big fluffy housecoats and new house slippers waiting for each of us.  A couple of big dogs were guarding the door, but they were pussy cats, enjoying sniffing way more than barking.

In the morning we ate our "petit déjeuner" on the roof terrace and could see beyond the clay roof tiles to the fields surrounding the area.  It's so beautiful.

Then came our favourite thing to do: browse through the market.  Uzès has a huge Saturday market, and we planned our itinerary so we would be there for the event.  Come browse with us!

Eels for dinner?

Fresh eggs

Colourful shopping bags.

Cooking pots and pans

A walk through the market is stimulation on so many levels.  There are sweet pastries and pungent spices that waft through the air; colourful cloth and woven baskets that draw your attention; fougasse (a type of flat cake) and cheese to taste; fabrics and lace that invite a touch; and the shuffle of people jousting for position while dogs bark and vendors call out their wares.  It's a feast for the senses!

Overheard, "Do you think that's grandpa?"  "No, couldn't be..."

Little clutches, big purses

Karl, I found a skirt!

And Karl saying, "Marguerite, I found a bike!"

We had dinner at Le Phuket, a delicious Thai restaurant.

And so ended our wonderful day in Uzès.
