Nancy, France

21-22.08.13

Nancy is where we celebrated our 37th wedding anniversary.

We had driven through Severne, stopping long enough for lunch, and it's a place which we hope to visit again one day.  Not so for Strasbourg which is huge and seemed to be in construction from one end to the other.  Quite a few "Route barrée" which confused Marge to no end.  And perhaps Karl too...

Is it all those years that make us look zonked? Or lack of sleep?

We stayed in Le Grand Hotel de la Reine on Place Stanislas.  The good thing was the location and its proximity to all the sites.  The bad thing was that it's very old and emanates a whiff of "je ne sais quoi".

The elegantly proportioned square is enclosed by highly ornate gilded wrought-iron gates and railings.

Lorraine's historic capital backs onto the Canal du Marne and the River Meurthe.  In the 18th century, Stanislas Leczinski, Duke of Lorraine, transformed the city, making it a model of 18-century urban planning.

The Place Stanislas, known colloquially as the place Stan', is a large pedestrianized square in Nancy, Lorraine, France. Since 1983, the architectural ensemble comprising the Place Stanislas and the extension of its axis, the Place de la Carrière and Place d'Alliance, has been on the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Lining the square are fine "hôtels particuliers" and chic restaurants.

After the War of the Polish Succession in 1737, the Duchy of Upper Lorraine, of which Nancy was the capital, was given to Stanisław Leszczyński, former King of Poland and father-in-law to King Louis XV of France. An earlier ruler, Leopold, Duke of Lorraine, had undertaken a lot of reconstruction in Lorraine, which had been ravaged by a series of wars.

We wanted to see Nancy ever since our Fed Ex guy suggested it to us.  He had worked in the area and knew it was really beautiful.

We went for a celebratory dinner at La Toq, which is the French word for a chef's tall white hat.  It was totally amazing!

Lox wrapped around brandade, a recipe made with cod, on an avocado purée.  Sesame cracker.

Chicken, yam and tempura.

Uncooked crème brulée - the best we've ever eaten!  A madeleine cake on the side.
